Difference

There’s a BIG difference between community theater and professional theater, and I’m not talking about talent. I’m talking about how things operate. In professional theater, people have defined jobs and responsibilities. In community theater, apparently the Set Designer is also the Technical Director, Stage Manager, truck driver, janitor, furniture mover, and occasional therapist, all for one fabulous bargain price! Listen, I’ve done it all, and I’m never above pitching in. That’s theater! But there’s a difference between being a team player and being taken advantage of. Some organizations want Broadway expectations with a bake sale infrastructure, and that’s where things get ridiculous. If you want to operate professionally, understand the jobs, respect the people doing them, and remember that just because someone CAN do something doesn’t mean it’s automatically their responsibility. The show must go on, but I don’t necessarily have to drive the truck that gets it there!
