So my friend Andrea texts me a picture of herself working at Howl-O-Scream, tongue sticking out, having the time of her life. My response? “What the fuck? I guess that’s cool.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy she’s working. Employment! Paychecks! Spooky fun! But apparently she forgot our entire conversation about how, after years of working there, I wasn't hired back. No explanation, no conversation, not even a response to my email. Just crickets. So perhaps a cheerful selfie from the very place that made me feel completely dismissed wasn’t the morning pick-me-up she imagined. I’m not mad at her, but sometimes I wonder if people actually listen when you tell them something hurt you. Anyway, happy Halloween! Apparently the scariest thing at Howl-O-Scream isn’t the haunted houses. It’s the lack of communication.
