Phantom

So apparently the theater gods decided to smile on me because I WON the digital lottery for PHANTOM! And not just “congratulations, here’s a seat somewhere behind a chandelier” lottery seats. DEAD CENTER, ROW H! I mean, what could possibly be better? The show was absolutely PHENOMENAL, gorgeous, huge, theatrical, and everything you want The Phantom of the Opera to be. But apparently the Phantom himself decided there wasn’t quite enough drama happening onstage because there were some technical difficulties along the way. Stagehands actually came running out to fix things, the scenery occasionally seemed to have a mind of its own, and at one point the curtain came down and the show completely stopped! Of course, as a theater person, I was fascinated. You never want anything to go wrong, but that’s the beauty of live theater. There’s no second take, no editing, and no “we’ll fix it in post.” You stop, fix it, regroup, and the show goes on. And they did! Phenomenal show, ridiculously amazing seats, and a little unexpected backstage drama thrown in for free. I mean, if you’re going to have technical difficulties during Phantom, at least you can blame the Opera Ghost!
