Alchemy

I definitely have the post show blues, even though there's still so much to wrap up. A few weeks ago, someone in the cast looked at me and said, "You have alchemy, and not a lot of people do." At first I wasn't sure what they meant, so I looked it up. Alchemy is about transforming ordinary things into something extraordinary, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that's exactly what I've always tried to do. I see an empty stage and imagine an entire world. I see lumber, paint, costumes, props, music, and a script, and I can already picture the finished production. Maybe my gift has never just been directing theater. Maybe it's seeing possibilities where others see obstacles and somehow turning an idea into something real. If that's what they meant by alchemy, it may be one of the greatest compliments I've ever received, and one I'll never forget.
