Do Fish Sleep?

The other night I came home and noticed the aquarium light was off—which meant I’d forgotten to feed the fish before I left. Oops. 😬
I flipped the light on, and one of the giant angelfish completely freaked out—splashing, slamming into the glass, and flinging himself dramatically into the far-right corner like he was broken.
I panicked. He didn’t move. I genuinely thought I’d scared him so badly he’d die overnight. I even stuck my hand in and nudged the rock near him. Still frozen.
Cut to the next morning… he’s totally fine. Casually swimming around like nothing ever happened.
Naturally, I had to Google: "Do fish sleep?" And guess what? They do! 💤
Their metabolism slows down
They don’t close their eyes (most don’t even have eyelids)
They hover in place, lie still, or hide in corners
No REM sleep, but they still rest
So, mystery solved. My fish wasn’t dying—he was just sleeping like a little aquatic weirdo. 🐠💤
Lesson learned: feed them before leaving… and don’t assume the worst when they look like frozen statues.
