If you have an Apple phone and the read message setting enabled, people are able to see when you've read their messages. If they don’t get a response from you, that can be taken as a response in itself. After all, everybody’s always got their phones with them nowadays. So if they send you a text and you see it pop up but decide not to reply, then that speaks volumes.
