Last week, my friend Deborah messaged me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to see Regency Girls. I sent her my actual phone number, and after a little back-and-forth, she booked a ticket on Amtrak and came down to San Diego to catch the show. I picked her up, we hung out, snacked on some fancy cheeses she brought, wandered around Balboa Park, and then I dropped her off at the theater. That night, over some bubbly and long-overdue conversation, we realized we hadn’t actually spoken in nearly nine years — wild. She opened up and shared that back in the day, I made her feel like she wasn’t talented and wouldn’t make it in theater, which was hard to hear. I’d cast her in many lead roles over the years, and she thought we were real friends, until things shifted and she felt left out. It made me sad, because I genuinely try to make people feel good, not the opposite — but her feelings are valid. Still, we had a fabulous time reconnecting, catching up on life, love, and her kids. And the best part? I’ll get to see her for weeks soon when I’m in SLO doing Oz, since she’s playing the Winkie General. Maybe she’ll get to jab me with her sword. :)
