“Honor thy father and thy mother” comes from a time when roles mattered more than relationships. But that’s not the world we live in anymore. I don’t have the energy to keep propping up a bad relationship just because someone happens to hold a certain title in my life. A parent is supposed to act like one — not just claim the role by default.
In the end, it’s about the relationship, not the label. And I don’t feel bad for choosing no contact. Sometimes protecting your peace is literally the only sane option left.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go order all the books those therapists talked about on that Oprah podcast: Adult Children… Rules of Estrangement Drama Free
Because if I’m going to heal, I might as well have the reading list.
