My mom just got her 2-year chip from AA, and I asked her why—because as far as I knew, she’s been sober for way longer than that. She told me she’s pretty sure she shared it with me before, but that around the time my grandma was dying, she started taking Lorazepam. (And yes, of course my brain immediately thinks of Parker Posey in White Lotus.)

She said it was a hard time, and I was living here then—but here’s the thing: that’s not actually how I remember it. I was still in my apartment downtown. I’ll never forget leaving her house to go home when she texted me that my grandma had passed. Funny how details shift over time, and how stories can get rewritten to match the narrative someone wants—or needs—to believe.

As most of you probably know, I don’t really align with AA’s philosophy. It’s never quite sat right with me, and I’ve got a lot of questions—like, where’s the line when it comes to things like antidepressants, which are also technically drugs?

That said… whatever works for people, works. Everyone’s journey is different. So congrats, Mom. Two years is still two years. 👏
